How do I know if my child is ready for Pre-K?

Students who are ready for learning in Pre-K can:

  • Follow one-step instructions.

  • Understand the importance of rules and consequences.

  • Understand that print carries a message.

  • Count aloud by one to 10.

  • Recognize and name circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles.

  • Care completely for their own toileting needs.

  • Ask questions, make observations, and engage in play to explore the physical and natural world.

  • Recognize some letters in their name.

  • Give a trusted adult their guardian's first and last names.

  • Ask and respond to open-ended questions.

  • Take turns during play and in conversations.

  • Sit still for 5-10 minutes to listen to a story read aloud.
