Emergency Preparedness

At the heart of our commitment to safety is the leadership of our Director of Safety and Security, who oversees the district’s multi-hazard preparedness activities, plans, and practices. This role is essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of every student, staff member, and family in the Mid-Del community.

In compliance with state law, Mid-Del Schools has implemented a comprehensive emergency management program that includes thorough planning, training, and regular drills. This proactive approach is guided by our district’s multi-hazard Emergency Operations Plan, designed to address any challenge that may arise. Mid-Del Schools is implementing the Standard Emergency Protocols developed by the i love u guys Foundation. By Fall of 2025, all schools will be trained with these protocols.

He is certified through FEMA’s Emergency Management Professional Development Series and continues to pursue advanced professional certifications to master the Incident Command System (ICS) and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

District Safety Committee

We are excited to announce the formation of our new District Safety Committee, a dedicated team focused on supporting the ongoing efforts to enhance the safety and security of our schools. This committee will play a vital role in reviewing and recommending safety practices to help maintain a secure and supportive environment for our students and staff.

The committee’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Evaluating school site safety committee meetings to ensure they produce actionable and high-quality results.

  2. Reviewing district-wide safety assessments and providing recommendations for improvement.

  3. Assessing safety and security concerns brought to the committee and offering actionable solutions.

  4. Adding a Safety & Security section to our District webpage to enhance communication and transparency.

We are committed to fostering a proactive and collaborative approach to safety, and we welcome your input as we embark on this important initiative.

Standard Response Protocol

Mid-Del Public Schools follows the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which provides clear guidance on actions to be taken by all occupants of a facility in the event of crisis. The SRP is designed to provide consistent, clear shared language and a series of actions to be taken by occupants. In the event of an emergency, a specific protocol will be declared and the appropriate direction and action will be followed.

Hold – In your room, office or area. Clear the hall.

Secure – Get inside. Lock outside doors.

Lockdown – Locks, lights, out of sight.

Evacuate – A location may be specified.

Shelter – State hazard and safety strategy.

Facilities

Our district is deeply committed to keeping students and staff safe by maintaining secure learning environments. Each campus has multiple layers of protection, including fencing, locked exterior and newly installed classroom door locks. All schools feature controlled-access vestibules that require visitors to check in through School Safe ID and pass through our access control system before entering the main campus. With the passage of the 2023 bond election, we are continuing to make upgrades in our security protocols.

All campuses are monitored continuously and equipped with surveillance cameras, panic buttons for immediate police notification, and a digital check-in system that conducts background checks on every visitor. These measures work together to provide robust, around-the-clock protection for everyone in our school community.

Game Day Procedures

At Mid-Del Schools, the safety and security of our students, staff, and community are our top priorities, both on our campuses and at our events. Mental Health/Wellness

Beyond creating a safe and nurturing physical environment, our district is committed to fostering the social, emotional, and mental well-being of every student and staff member. We work to align our mental health policies and protocols with community resources focused on mental health treatment options and crisis response intervention. We offer a range of resources and services—such as site school counselors, professional counselors, specialized programs, and practical tools—that help build a supportive culture where healthy mindsets can thrive.

  • Site School Counselors: Every elementary school has at least one certified school counselor, with additional staff depending on enrollment. Every middle school has three certified school counselors, with each high school having four certified school counselors. Our Career Academy and Mid-Del Technology Center also has school counselors within those areas that support our students very similar to those at our sites. Our counselors are highly trained in social-emotional learning and mental health practices. They deliver lessons to students from Pre-K through 12th grade and conduct both group and individual advisement and support for our students.

  • Mid-Del Mental Health Specialists: Mid-Del Public Schools has created licensed counseling positions within our district to coordinate, facilitate, and implement mental health services for students and families within the district. Our Mental Health Specialists provide group and individual counseling, family education opportunities, and work daily to build relationships with community partners willing to partner with Mid-Del to support our families and students.

  • Mid-Del Youth and Family Partnership: Mid-Del Public Schools contracts with Mid-Del Youth and Family Center provide up to 18 sessions yearly of confidential counseling to assist with multiple behavioral and emotional issues that may arise. Through our Employee Assistance Program, Mid-Del Youth and Family Center provides professional counseling services to Mid-Del School employees and their immediate family members. The same service is also provided for all our students during their time in Mid-Del.

Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic and Agency Partnerships: In partnership with the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Department, as well as independent licensed counselors and agencies, our district has worked to grow partnerships to provide support to our students and families seeking short-term and long-term crisis services.

This comprehensive support network ensures our students can grow academically, socially, and emotionally in an environment that values their overall well-being.
