Math classes should be about much more than a series of formulas and procedures that students should memorize. In Mid-Del, we work to keep our students from getting lost in the tangle of unconnected algorithms. We begin with teaching for conceptual understanding, building upon prior knowledge in a context that students can relate to, before we move to learning and practicing procedural knowledge and real-world application.
“We don’t need students to calculate quickly in math. We need students who can ask good questions, map out pathways, reason about complex solutions, set up models and communicate in different forms.” - Jo Boaler
We view math globally from K-12, instead of thirteen different installments of separate lessons. We encourage discovery-learning through tactile activities and the use of manipulatives. Deep understanding of the mathematical concepts at each grade level will give students the tools they need to be successful in any college, career, or citizenship path they follow.
Not only do lessons focus on the grade level Oklahoma Academic Standards for Math but also the habits of mind we want our students to develop as outlined in the Oklahoma Mathematical Actions and Processes.
Develop a Deep and Flexible Conceptual Understanding
Develop Accurate and Appropriate Procedural Fluency
Develop Strategies for Problem Solving
Develop Mathematical Reasoning
Develop a Productive Mathematical Disposition
Develop the Ability to Make Conjectures, Model, and Generalize
Develop the Ability to Communicate Mathematically
State testing in math occurs in 3rd through 8th grades in the form of an Oklahoma School Testing Program (OSTP) assessment.
