The Midwest City Middle School Bombers were able to bring Poetry and Chill to their school through a grant from the Oklahoma Arts Council. They worked with Gregory the Second, who is head of the program to provide Bomber 6th graders with an innovative six week interactive literacy program that integrated poetry, writing, and music.
Poetry and Chill Literacy Workshops provide an in-school experience that provides students’ weekly opportunities to connect with literacy through varying forms of culturally relevant and engaging artistic expression to which reading, writing, and vocabulary development are essential. PCLW operated weekly with embedded opportunities for reflection, expression, community and social awareness via writing and/or oral performance. The end result was students would become more proficient readers as a result of their passionate engagement and ongoing practice of artistic expression through writing and oral performance. Poetry & Chill Literacy Workshops directly addressed the proficiency and community outreach goals, which ultimately seeks to increase the number of proficient readers in the Midwest City Middle School.
"It is something that I have been working on for over a year, so it is definitely a labor of love. The end result provided our students with a deeper understanding of themselves, their community, and how literacy can impact us all. I am very proud of the program and our students, and hope that the program continues to inspire them as they continue with their education," said Jody Cook, 6th grade Literacy teacher at Midwest City Middle School.
Great work Ms. Cook and great job Bombers! Poetry and Chill Kids
